“Hear Here”
Even if you’ve never heard of the subject of “You’ve Heard These Hands,” you are likely to enjoy this account of his many decades in the music business. Written by Don Randi with Karen “Nish” Nishimura, it deftly, often humorously, relates stories of the noted personalities he worked with as keyboard artist, composer, arranger and music director. Many of the biggest names in jazz and pop music are represented, among them: Elvis, the Righteous Brothers, the Beach Boys, Nancy Sinatra, Linda Ronstadt, Sonny & Cher, the Jacksons, Phil Spector. The Wall of Sound and the Wrecking Crew. Plus Raquel Welch?! What comes through is a love of music, from growing up in the Catskills through his adult years in LA, as well as his regard for other musicians, his fight to see they got their due, and the pranks they played on each other. Especially fascinating are the memories of the many jazz clubs in Hollywood during the 50s, 60s and 70s. Of course, there is the story of the venue he started in 1970 and which is still going strong in Studio City, the Baked Potato. As with the club, there’s nothing half-baked about this book.
August 11, 2015: Insightful interview with Don Randi on Cue Castanets! He gives a revealing look into his life as a session player with the Wall of Sound and working with Phil Spector. Just enough to wet your appetite for “You’ve Heard These Hands.”
